Sometimes you look at a space around the home, and you want to add a little something extra. Wall art isn’t what you’re looking for, and funky furniture won’t cut it, so what to do? Did you ever consider that little something extra as something that could be under your feet? Painting a geometric porch floor pattern (similarly to that of a fun accent wall) is a fun and relatively easy way to put a fun and unique twist on a shared outdoor space. Unsure of where to start? We’ll walk you through!

Pick Your Shape and Your Colors

What’s your favorite shape, and what would complement the shape and size of the porch? What’s your style – traditional, modern, contemporary? Do some research on what patterns you love and determine which would look great in your outdoor space. A few things to consider: unless you’re courageous and bold (and have lots of time on your hands) steer clear of smaller patterns; they’ll be harder to implement and take forever to paint!

Next, go ahead and pick your colors. Go with something that will accent the space and add to it, not distract from it. While there’s a sense of subjectivity as far as preferences go, make sure it’s something that will be pleasing to every eye, year round. For example, warm sage green and a creamy, warm white would look terrific.

Paint and Create

It’s time to put your idea to work! Once you have both paint colors, decide which would be best for the “background” of the pattern. Using large rollers specifically for rough, wood surfaces, roll on your first coat. You’ll need to allow that to dry for 24 hours, so, in the meantime, create your template. This can be as easy as downloading a printable template from off the Internet or creating one yourself out of poster board. Either way, you’ll want to make sure that you use your floorboards as a guide, keeping the template within specific perimeters as far as length and width. For example, if you choose to create a model out of poster board, make sure the width of the board covers an exact, whole number of boards – no halves or quarters.

A Beautiful Mess

Start Outlining

You’ll see the beginnings of your dream becoming a reality with this next step: tracing the pattern on the floor. With your template made and cut from your poster board, next you’ll lay it down on the porch and start tracing with a pencil. Start in a corner, and work outward from there – make sure that you’re moving your template strategically so that the tracings meet up to form the shape pattern that you’re looking for.

Tape It Up Well

Depending on the size of the floor, be prepared to invest in a lot of painter’s tape. You’ll want to buy the thinner strips for better accuracy as far as outlining the shape, and you’ll also not want to scrimp on the cheap stuff, which can allow for leaking and bleeding of the paint. Tape up your markings so that your pattern is clearly and accurately defined within the perimeters of the tape, and then run over each piece of tape with a damp washcloth (this will further ensure no leakage).

Paint Your Shapes

You’ll want to use a smaller brush for more proficiency and to ensure that you’re not accidentally going out of the lines – a little mistake is very noticeable. Take your time. If it takes you a long time to paint the entire porch, remove the tape as you go; it’s best to pull paint up when it’s mostly (not completely) dry.

There you have it – a beautiful, unique patterned porch that suits your taste and makes a bold decorative statement!
